After a miracle of a win against the Cincinnati Bengals with Mason Crosby FINALLY kicking the ball through the uprights, the Green Bay Packers returned to play this past Sunday. The time had come. The four wins, one loss Packers were set to face NFC North rival, the Chicago Bears, at Soldier Field. The Bears also had three wins and two losses coming into week six, so this was definitely a battle for first place in the division. The Bears and Packers have a very long historic rivalry, as it is also known to be the biggest rivalry in the National Football League. The Bears came out hungry as they have gotten tired of the Packers beating them up so many times, especially in recent years. The Bears seem to have improved over the offseason as well after the addition of Justin Fields during the NFL draft back in April. Justin Fields was drafted in the first round from the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Bears may have finally found a consistent quarterback after having to deal with so many busts over the years with guys like Rex Grossman, Jay Cutler, and Mitch Trubisky. It was time to put their new QB to his first big test facing the Packers. However, for Aaron Rodgers and company, it was time to stop the hype of the Bears as the Packers had stayed hot for the most part this season. What a matchup this one was set out to be!
As the game started, both defenses started off hot, making a few stops and not allowing any points on the board. However, the Bears finally were the first ones to break through with a touchdown scored by Khalil Herbert on a one-yard rush, followed by an extra point. The Bears got the early lead in the first quarter by the score of 7-0. After giving up the early lead, the Packers defensive were not satisfied with their game play and quickly studied their playbook, trying to get revenge on the Bears. Soon after going down 7-0, the Packers got their revenge with an interception by Darnell Savage who caught the ball in the Bears end zone, which prevented Chicago from scoring again. It was an absolute SAVAGE move! Since the ball was intercepted in the end zone, it was considered a touchback, which meant that the Packers would start with the ball at their own 20-yard line. This gave the Packers offense a little bit of breathing room as they did not have the opposing end zone right on their backs to start their next drive.
As Rodgers and crew came out, they started off with an incomplete pass, which did not look promising. However, they caught a break, because one of the Bears players was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, which lead to a 15-yard penalty. The Packers got a redo with another first down and better field position. A couple plays had gone by, and it was already the end of the first quarter, with the Bears still leading 7-0. As the second quarter began, the Packers offense sparked as Aaron Jones got a few touches, and Davante Adams with a big 32-yard reception leading them all the way downfield. After finally attempting to score when near the goal line, the Packers finally made it into the end zone on a short pass to Allen Lazard. Packers had tied the game 7-7.
The Packers defense then went out and forced the Bears offense to a quick three and out, allowing Rodgers to come back out on the field soon after scoring a touchdown. The Packers were starting to go on a roll. Once they got the ball, they took the ball all the way down the field, only this time setting up in field goal position. It was Mason Crosby’s time to shine as he had an incredibly inconsistent game against the Bengals the week before missing three of seven field goals, and missing an extra point as well. Back to the Bears game, however, he was set to kick a 39-yard field goal and that he did! Packers got their first lead of the game, with the score of 10-7.
Fast forward to the start of the second half, the Packers looked to be firing on all cylinders. Another quick drive forcing the Bears offense off the field, lead to the Packers offense coming out hungry for more. This time it was the Aaron Jones show. No surprise there. Jones had a 28-yard run and eventually scored a touchdown, putting the Packers up 17-7.
Moving on to the fourth quarter, the Bears were not ready to give up yet. The Bears rookie, Justin Fields, was ready to go off on this drive, trying to prove he could handle high pressure situations. He completed quite a few passes, which eventually lead to a Bears touchdown. The Bears were now only down three, with the fourth quarter starting to wind down. The score was now 17-14 Packers.
The Green and Gold offense then came out trying to increase their lead and put the game away for good. Rodgers took full control of this drive as he found his targets and kept on converting. One of the big plays of that drive was a 41-yard pass to Davante Adams, putting the Packers in great field position with the clock winding down on the game. A couple plays afterwards, the Packers had a first and goal at the 6-yard line. Rodgers was ready to put the nail in the coffin. Once the play started, Rodgers had trouble finding his targets, as he made a few pump fakes, but eventually decided to run it into the end zone himself, putting the Packers up 24-14. Once Rodgers scored, he broke out the championship belt in celebration because nothing is more enjoyable for all Cheese Heads than beating Da Bears!
After Rodgers scored the final touchdown, Bears fans did not take too kindly to him dominating against the Bears once again, as many people decided to flip the bird at him out of bitterness.
Once he noticed the disrespect, Rodgers had the perfect response, screaming to the people of Chicago “I OWN YOU! I STILL OWN YOU! I STILL OWN YOU!!”
Let it all out Rodgers! Gotta love those hot mic moments. The Packers are really on to something as they had improved to 5-1 on the season. After the big win against the Bears, Green Bay will look to continue their dominance as they return to Lambeau Field for a matchup against Washington.
Final score: Packers- 24, Bears- 14.
